UV lamps for manicures: they would damage DNA

The harmfulness of UVs has already been demonstrated, particularly for the skin. On the other hand, the UV lamps marketed in supermarketswithout contraindications, seem safe, despite including UV radiation between 340 and 395 nm and few studies on the subject (source 1).

According to’study published in the journal Nature (Source 2), the UV lamps to harden the varnish would damage and kill up to 20 to 30% of the cells for an exposure of only 20 minutes. This study therefore relates to in vitro irradiation of three different cell lines: adult human skin keratinocytes, human foreskin fibroblasts and mouse embryonic fibroblasts, in order to evaluate DNA damage and the mutagenic effects of UV radiation.
